  Politics and Media

'For my degree I wanted to do a media-based course but was also keen to learn more about Europe.  A family friend recommended the course at Northumbria and I came to have a look at the University - I liked the city and was very happy to be studying near Newcastle United!

My favourite politics module has been ideologies.  We compared the situation in China and Europe so I could identify with everything they talked about.  On the course, I've learned a lot about global media, advertising, films and the politics of advertising.  The course is good and so are the tutors too and they respond quickly - sometimes within minutes!

I am now working on my dissertation about the global Hollywood film industry and Chinese National file industry and I'm happy that I have an offer for a Masters in Film Studies at Northumbria next year'.

Kheng Lee Chang
  LLB (Hons) Exempting

'I came here as Northumbria has one of the best reputations for law and I liked the location - a student village situated in cosmopolitan city.  I like the way the course is taught, it’s very different from the Malaysian system of education.  I've learned to work more independently and respect the ideas of other students and staff.  The tutors are really great.  They are always available and helpful when I go and ask their advice on my studies and I am gratefully for their understanding and support.

During my free time, I like to explore Newcastle and its surrounding areas, especially the historic castles and the beaches.  Last year I was Secretary of the Malaysian Society and part of the Student Liaison Committee.  When I graduate I hope to be a solicitor'.

  LLM International Commercial Law

For Chinese students with no common law background this LLM programme will provide a good understanding of the common law system, which is definitely helpful for advancing your career.  The options available on the programme are also very useful in practice, which in one of the most attractive features of the programme.  Northumbria University and the School of Law are very familiar with Chinese students and the academic and administrative staff are very helpful in resolving any problems you may have.  Newcastle is one of the best places for Chinese students to experience British living, society and student life.  The prices are low, the environment is good and the people are kind and warn hearted.  I have been able to put a lot of what I learnt on the programme into practice in my current job and remain in contact with the programme leader and my fellow students from France, England and China.

  Bar Vocational Course

The University has a great reputation for its friendly environment and support services for international students.

I heard it before from the previous students of the University, but now I am in a position to tell the same to other potential international students who are making the decision.  Further I found the faculties and administrative staff very cooperative and I indeed feel very homely.

Vanessa came to Northumbria University to study for an MBA after winning the Millennium Scholarship for International Students.

'I wanted to do a business degree to expand my skills and knowledge in order to return to Mexico with the ability to make good decisions for my future company.  The MBA has enriched me both personally and professionally.  I have immersed myself into a new culture, taking this opportunity to learn from everything around me.  I still can't believe I am really here.  It's like a dream!'

Biotechnology

'I am originally from a town called Kota Kinabalu, in Sahah, East Malaysia.  A friend of the family introduced me to Northumbria and told me that people in Newcastle are friendly and helpful.  Now, I live here, I like Newcastle a lot.  It is good place to live and study.  A peaceful city with lots of students'.

What I like most about the course is the medical microbiology aspect.  I like looking at micro-organisms, their colonies, colours and shape.  I also enjoy working on experiments that enable us to differentiate between different bacteria.  I am currently applying for my placement and hope to go into biotechnology when I graduate.
