Students Experience
Kim Ghang Min
Kim Ghang Min is a 24-year-old Korean student who joined the full time English as a Foreign Language course in September 2004. After finishing his course and travelling around Europe for six weeks, he will return to Korea to finish his studies at university, and then set out to fulfill his ambition to work for the United Nations.

Why did you choose to come to Newcastle in the UK?

I chose to come to the UK because I wanted to experience some European culture. I didn't go to London because being from Seoul, the biggest city in Korea with a population of about 10.3 million people, I wanted to go somewhere less hectic, and also Newcastle is a much cheaper place to live which is great for students.

What are your opinions of Newcastle?

I like Newcastle, the people are very friendly. I have been lucky enough to share a house with 2 English people, one of whom has been training to teach English as a Foreign Language, and so this has helped my pronunciation massively. I have found it easiest to improve my speaking by enjoying conversation with my housemates.

What were your first impressions of the college?

I thought the College looked really good and there was so much going on around the campus. The facilities in the English department are excellent, with language learning labs so that you can improve your speaking and listening skills. In Korea we learn English at school but we do not get to improve our pronunciation so the use of the language labs has been great for me. I also like the facilities in general, like computer access and sports equipment.

What is the best thing about studying at Newcastle College?

The organisation! The classes, the facilities, the timetables; everything is very well organised and this made me feel more relaxed and happy with what I was learning. The excellent organisation means that everyone feels motivated and enthusiastic and there is plenty of interaction between the students and teachers in classes. I think this is particularly good for Asian students. I found all the teachers very good and they were very well qualified. It was great having my own tutor and having the opportunity to talk to them one to one.

What support did you receive from the International Office?

The International Office is great as it can provide help with everything; accommodation, visa queries, general welfare, anything you need. I was very happy with the level of support I received.

What advice would you give to new students considering coming to study at Newcastle College?

For people like me who come from an Asian background, I would say be rude! In England it is not disrespectful to ask questions, to speak up with answers, and to relax and enjoy your classes. Once I had realised that I did not have to sit in silence, I started to get so much more from my lessons.

I think it is also important to find a good balance in your activities - yes, you have come to study but you also need to have other interests. I have really enjoyed getting a job, but whatever interests you, sports, clubs, anything, get involved as you will get so much more out of your time here.

I have been really lucky as I have met lots of interesting people and made some great friends. At the moment I feel as if Newcastle is my home.
