Announcement from the Vice-Chancellor - Northumbria named Best New University |
![]() |
"I was delighted to read on Friday morning that Northumbria was named Britain's Best New University in 2005. As well as this accolade, the University scored highly throughout the guide with 10 of our subject areas being rated in the top 20 in the country.
| |
In particular, Nursing, Librarianship and Information Management received outstanding commendations, being placed fourth and sixth in the country respectively and our Built Environment courses fared particularly well with Land and Property Management, Architecture and Building all featuring in the top 20. Further successes were had in the subject areas of Food Science; Russian and East European Languages; Drama, Dance and Cinematics and Art & Design. Our excellent teaching quality as well as investment in student facilities helped us to secure the title. Northumbria students enjoy a higher-than-average staff student ratio and graduates enjoy better employment prospects than most others. This result sets Northumbria apart as the leading modern university in the UK and is a significant achievement in an increasingly competitive arena. It is a compliment to the quality of our teaching and the deep-seated culture of providing the best possible support for our students, and it is especially pleasing coming so close on the heels of our successful Institutional Audit." 2007 BJ seminar |
![]() |
Northumbria University gave an introduction seminar on 27 th October 2007 (Saturday) at the speech hall in Tsinghua University Campus in Beijing with a purpose of presenting the Law School of Northumbria and one of its distance learning programme — LLM International Commercial Law programme in specialty. Meanwhile, the seminar aimed at meeting up with prospective students as well as having a face-to-face communication with them. As the official student recruitment agent of Northumbria in China , AOC also took part in this event as part of the seminar makers. |
Mr. Simon Spurgeon, Senior Lecturer at School of Law , was invited to attend the seminar as the speechmaker. There are about 16 students participated in the event. They all intended to be applicant of this LLM distance learning programme. The speech began with the brief introduction of the School. The School of Law at Northumbria University is the largest law department in the North of England. The School maintains close links with the legal profession and has been validated by both the Law Society of England and Wales and the Bar Council for Legal Education to run postgraduate vocational training courses for prospective barristers and solicitors. Northumbria School of Law is building its reputation for practical, innovative Masters Programmes, which are accessible to a wide range of professions. These programmes attract a diverse and interesting student group from all over the world and some can be studied on a fulltime basis, although many students now opt to study via distance learning which provides a more flexible approach more suitable to particular lifestyles. In particular, the Law School has an extremely strong reputation for distance learning Masters programmes in the fields of International Commercial Law. Mr. Spurgeon then gave further information on this programme and its structure. The LLM in International Commercial Law offers students the opportunity to study a variety of commercial law subjects in an international context. The programme builds upon participants experience – whether gained through undergraduate study, employment or legal practice – and in addition to developing existing expertise and knowledge, the programme offers a range of practical benefits including the ability to apply specialist legal knowledge to practical problems and to critically evaluate legal issues. The programme consists of 3 main parts: Core Modules; Options and the Project. Legal Research in Commercial Law and Law of International Trade make up of the core modules. Four options must be selected from the optional modules lists. Each core and optional module is assessed through the completion of a written assignment. There are no examinations on this programme. An LLM is gained by completing a dissertation of between 16,000 ~ 20,000 words in a related topic of the course. With the detailed explanation above, students all got a comprehensive idea of the programme. After the seminar, half an hour was left for the question. Besides the content of the course, student visa in Britain , the payment of tuition fee and the accommodation of final year were the issue they most concerned. They got their replies from Mr. Spurgeon and AOC satisfactorily. |

Dr. Gerry Hayden, the Head of International Development of the School of Computing , Engineering and Information Sciences, was invited to be the speechmaker in the seminar and comment on the study in both Britain and Northumbria . Following the welcoming speech by the host, Dr. Hayden gave a brief introduction on Britain 's higher education system and the Northumbria University . “Named Britain 's Best New University by The Sunday Times for three years in a row, Northumbria offers a high standard of teaching, excellent facilities and a supportive environment for international students. Northumbria is one of Britain 's largest modern universities with around 25,000 students, including approximately 3,000 international students. The University has strong links with industry, and courses are designed to prepare students for successful careers. Professional bodies also officially recognize many degrees. ” The seminar then came to the presentation on academic strengths of Northumbria to the listeners. In official assessments carried out by the Quality Assurance Agency, the University has been judged Excellent (awarded at least 22 points out of 24) in many subject areas including built environment; business management; education; English; electrical and electronic engineering; law; and psychology. With the presentation above, Dr. Hayden shared his opinions and suggestions to the students in choosing the right school and subject. “A suitable choice would be the one which based on your own interest together with the trend of future development. Date: 3th Feb. 2007- 4th Feb. 2007 Time : 13:00 - 17:00 Venue: Guangzhou China Hotel |
“Education UK Exhibition 2007” was held on 3 rd – 4 th February 2007 at Guangzhou China Hotel 。 This exhibition was authorized by the Department of Education of Guangdong Province as well as co-organized by the Cultural and Education Section of the British Consulate – General and Guangdong Education Service of International Exchanges. The exhibition showcased educational excellence in the UK to the general public, and introduced the most up-to-date courses and application information. Seminars and other activities were also held during the exhibition. 45 famous academies and their representatives have joined in the event as exhibitors. Each of the 45 institutions had a booth provided by the entrepreneur. The spectrum of institutions was incredibly broad. There were large, research- based universities, medium-sized colleges and small, trade-specific schools. It gave a comprehensive, cohesive understanding of the British higher education system and provided a variety of choices for the students who want to study in the UK . As the unique representative of Northumbria University in Guangzhou , AOC also attended in the exhibition with the University to introduce the latest news and programmes as well as our strength in overseas study to the students. We passed out pamphlets and brochures which detailed specific courses, programmes and degrees and degrees offered at Northumbria . Meanwhile, students and their parents went to the booth to discuss various issues as well as enquire for more information with us. We had the pleasure to have Dr. Gerry Hayden, who is the Head of International Development of the School of Computing , Engineering and Information Sciences at Northumbria University to join as in this event so that he can explain the policies available to international students properly and communicate with students face-to-face. The consensus among participants was that the event was very helpful. It was said that the entire approach was really neat and interesting. What they got were not glorified advertisements but useful information such as different degrees, post-graduation opportunities, visa, local living expense and health care issues. The exhibition opened their eyes to the possibility of a UK education. The exhibition played such an active role in linking between students and universities, it is hoped that similar events will be held on continuously. |

2006 Education UK enrolment interviews |
![]() |
“Education UK enrolment interviews 2006” was an exhibition which offered the last chance to enroll for the 2006/07 academic year for international students and was organized by the Cultural and Education Section of the British Consulate – General. More than 5,000 public have come to this two-day event for its first day on 19 th August at Wanchai China Resources Building . |
A wide range of institutions attended in the event include: 48 higher education universities, 21 further education colleges and 2 independent boarding schools which are all accredited by the British Council. A remarkable opportunity was provided for students to meet representatives from UK educational institutions as well as get and immediate offer of a place for the September semester. “The degrees and qualifications from UK higher education institutions are known around the world as high quality and world class. This can be a great selling point when looking for work in the future. ” That was the reason why a lot of students intend to study in the UK . Besides students, many parents came to the exhibition with their children. In their opinion, with traditions of excellence dating back hundreds of years, high class institutions at every corner and the flexibility of the learning programme, the United Kingdom has much to offer international students than the other English-speaking countries. Another, the cost of education for an international student in the UK can be lower compared to the USA and other countries. Because most degree programmes in the UK require a three-year course and a masters programme is typically between one and two years. As the official student recruitment agent of Northumbria University in Hong Kong , AOC was one of the exhibitors together with the university. Northumbria continues to receive official recognition as one of Britain 's best universities for the outstanding quality of its course. The knowledge and practical skills provided by Northumbria are well-regarded by employers. Besides, free support with English language and study skills are provided to international students. The above made Northumbria one of the most popular institutions in the exhibition. |
