Announcement from the Vice-Chancellor - Northumbria named Best New University

"I was delighted to read on Friday morning that Northumbria was named Britain's Best New University in 2005.

As well as this accolade, the University scored highly throughout the guide with 10 of our subject areas being rated in the top 20 in the country.

In particular, Nursing, Librarianship and Information Management received outstanding commendations, being placed fourth and sixth in the country respectively and our Built Environment courses fared particularly well with Land and Property Management, Architecture and Building all featuring in the top 20.

Further successes were had in the subject areas of Food Science; Russian and East European Languages; Drama, Dance and Cinematics and Art & Design.

Our excellent teaching quality as well as investment in student facilities helped us to secure the title. Northumbria students enjoy a higher-than-average staff student ratio and graduates enjoy better employment prospects than most others.

This result sets Northumbria apart as the leading modern university in the UK and is a significant achievement in an increasingly competitive arena.

It is a compliment to the quality of our teaching and the deep-seated culture of providing the best possible support for our students, and it is especially pleasing coming so close on the heels of our successful Institutional Audit."

Professor Kel Fidler
Vice-Chancellor
Northumbria University

“The degrees and qualifications from UK higher education institutions are known around the world as high quality and world class. This can be a great selling point when looking for work in the future. ” That was the reason why a lot of students prefer studying in the UK. Besides students, many parents came to the exhibition with their children. In their opinion, with traditions of excellence dating back hundreds of years, high class institutions at every corner and the flexibility of the learning programme, the United Kingdom has much to offer international students than the other English-speaking countries. Another, the cost of education for an international student in the UK can be lower compared to the USA and other countries. Because most degree programmes in the UK require a three-year course and masters programme is typically between one and two years.
